A 2nd place winner of an International design competition for the development of Jabal Khandama – a mountaintop overlooking the city of Mecca in 2009.
Pivotal to the scheme’s success was how to design for the movement of huge number of people from the development down the mountain during the Hajj when the population would grow into millions. Five pedestrian transporters or “People Viaducts” as the mode of orderly traversing up and down the mountain in the most comfortable and safest way possible were conceptualised.
The high curved walls of the viaducts that open directionally towards the Kaabah are also intended to be the visual beacons for the daily mass of
people traversing up and down the mountain.
